AIDP World Conference, Towards an international Court on Terrorism, Bucharest, 16 February 2017

The International Association of Penal Law (AIDP) in cooperation with the national group of Romania is organizing the AIDP World Conference on “Towards an international Court on Terrorism” in Bucharest, Romania, on 16 February 2017.

Throughout the last decades, terrorism has been a growing concern and a persistent topic on the international agenda, as one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. The recent events have showed an expansion of the terrorist phenomenon, as well as a significant growth in frequency and atrocity of the terrorist acts, which require increased involvement and action of the international community as a whole. In 2015, Romania and Spain have launched a process of reflection on the possibility of creating an international court aimed at sanctioning terrorist acts. The fundamental rationale that lies behind this initiative is the idea that response to a global threat, as terrorism is, requires global action, based on legal tools, such as the one provided by the international criminal law. The Romanian-Spanish initiative has already generated extensive debate within the international community including civil society.

The objective of the World Conference is to contribute to the exchange of perspectives on an international criminal court against terrorism. For this purpose, the conference aims to generate discussion with academics and practitioners from many countries.
